hurray for friday! i'm packed this weekend, what about you? tonight i'm seeing pagent of the masters with some friends -- which is this seriously cool show where real people pose as if they were a painting, but it totally looks like a painting, not real people! it's legit :) what are you doing this weekend?

hello dears. how is your thursday going today? so i just realized that i past my 1 year anniversary on etsy! i sold my very first item on july 26 of 2008, it was so exciting making my very first sale ;)

rubyellen + cupcakes:

so i mentioned last friday that i was going to breakfast to meet rubyellen from cakies! if you don't know ruby, you simply must. she is the most talented seamstress and artist. ( her shop is here )

it was so fabulous! she is beautiful, hilarious, thoughtful, sweet, amazing, and so real. and i got to meet brave + true, who are the most adorable girls ever. and she has another girl on the way!!

we discussed lots over pancakes and waffles and laughed as true dipped her pancakes into ketchup. man, kids are so awesome. i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that probably doesn't taste that good, but true seemed to really enjoy it ;) brave was so precious and wanted to do everything her big sister was doing.

anyway, ruby made me some delicious red velvet cupcakes. i seriously have a thing for cupcakes. i barely got a picture cause i wanted to eat them all. as you can see, 2 cupcakes didn't make it in the picture ;) but here you go. isn't she amazing?

Please share a little about you and your shop: I am really bad at describing myself. When I was in school we did this assignment, where we all wrote our names at the top of a piece of paper, and passed it around the room. Each student had to write one word describing whoever's name was on the paper. Most of the things people wrote about me were either: nice, shy, and funny. One person wrote that I was a bright light in a once dark room. I'll never forget that.

I guess I could describe myself as pretty independent. I can be really shy or really outgoing, depending on the setting. I love to laugh the most. There is nothing better than a good genuine laugh. Despite my cute and innocent looking artwork, I can be quite sassy with sarcasm.

My shop could be described as cute or whimsical. I like to incorporate nature into my dwellings..some having mushrooms by the door or tree stump bases. I think a village of my houses would be perfect nestled in the forest on a bed of moss, surrounded by ferns and wild flowers.

How did you get started making petite houses? I guess it made sense to me, because I've always been fascinated with miniature things, especially houses. My aunt and grandma always encouraged me to be a children's illustrator. I know this isn't children's illustrating, but I think my style of cute whimsical art comes out in the houses. I would definitely love to build some villages and gnomes to go with them and make stories to go along with the photos.

What inspires you: anything and everything! I think mostly colors palettes though. My favorite part of making a house is the painting part, getting to pick out what colors I'll use. I am definitely a mood painter.

Favorite Music: This is a hard one. I listen to such a variety. One day I'll have something mellow in like Bon Iver...and the next I'll be listening to Bob Segar, CCR, or Lauryn Hill. I have also been known to listen to Paula Abdul every once in a while. I've loved her ever since I can remember. Putting on my stretch pants, baggy shirt, side ponytail, and rocking out to her "Under My Spell Tour" VHS tape. Oh the 90's. I don't care what people say about her, I still love her.

shop packaging:

so i did a post about my shop packaging a little while ago. i really did love those airmail envelopes. but then i got some vellum envelopes and decided to switch it up. so items either get placed in the kraft boxes tied with lace + baker's twine, or into the golden manila envelopes, which are then placed into the vellum bags with an 'oh, hello friend.' label.

the brown kraft bags are hand screen printed with my gocco machine. and unfortunately i made the photos too light, but there is a package with hair pins in them that is sewn closed with a piece of lace trim. i will take better pictures another time to show you. but i really do love that packaging.

and it is a happy friday indeed. GUESS WHO i get to meet today .... 5 lovely ladies! first i'm having breakfast with rubyellen from my cakies + her adorable little girls! empty room:

so my roommate moved out a couple months ago. it was a sad day.

empty room!? um, i think this calls for some new shelves, a cute desk, and some lovely wall art! ;) i decided to turn the room into my studio. hurray! i mean, i think the bedroom and workroom should be separate: it was way too intense to have everything in one room. piles of clothes mixed in with papers and fabric and too many things, it is not so good.

but whenever i begin to fill a room with things, i get a little overwhelmed with the possibilities of what i could do with it. i want to keep it simple + organized. but i want it to be awesome! so, do you have any tips? what do you think? suggestions most definitely welcome, and of course appreciated.
