empty room:

emptyroom
so my roommate moved out a couple months ago. it was a sad day.

empty room!? um, i think this calls for some new shelves, a cute desk, and some lovely wall art! ;) i decided to turn the room into my studio. hurray! i mean, i think the bedroom and workroom should be separate: it was way too intense to have everything in one room. piles of clothes mixed in with papers and fabric and too many things, it is not so good.

but whenever i begin to fill a room with things, i get a little overwhelmed with the possibilities of what i could do with it. i want to keep it simple + organized. but i want it to be awesome! so, do you have any tips? what do you think? suggestions most definitely welcome, and of course appreciated.

xo.

13 hello's:

  1. How fun! A whole new room to play in and decorate!

HOw big is it? Would you have room for a cute bench that opens up for storage to sit against the window? You could put lots of lovely pillows on it -that way it would be pretty too!

  2. Yes, I like the bench idea. I usually take myself over to Ikea when I need room inspiration and check out their model rooms. If nothing else, it helps me get a feel for what rooms energize me so I can find similar elements to include. Bonus if you can fine cheap, pretty, organizing things while you're at Ikea!

  3. ooh la la ! nothing is more inviting than an open room (&potential craft space!)

Etsy's Open Studios group is awesome for inspiration

&i'm obsessed with the cute organizational/office stuff at See Jane Work (the brocade collection, anyone?)

  4. empty rooms are like blank canvases, very intimidating and scary. i think the best thing to do is get a vision of what you want and just start adding some pieces and go from there. things will change and evolve as your space takes form, but it's going to be great! having a studio is something i miss very much.

  7. Aww I've had sad roommate move-out days too. But kudos on converting to a studio! Def. get a rug or cover-up for the floor esp. if you are renting and working with paint or any other material that might get on the floor. Good luck!

  8. That room may be empty but it's still pretty!! :) It's great that you'll have a work room with so much natural light!

I would start with a nice desk and chair... or maybe doing something with the walls?

  9. How exciting it must be to gain an office! I love all organizational things so when I move back into my house someday and get to work on the office/guest room, I am going to fill it with fun industrial shelving and inspiring prints and all sorts of pretty things. I don't know that I have any specific suggestions.... You could do a lace collage on a corkboard so you can pin things on top of the lace.... lots of hooks on the wall... a big comfy chair (maybe a papasan) somewhere in there for you to take a break on. Gosh, I don't know. Whatever inspires you!!!

  10. Whatever you do, make sure that you have an uber-comfy chair for those long hours, enough space to stretch out on the floor when you need a break, and plants to breathe extra life, creativity, and oxygen into the air! I don't know about you, but a cup of tea usually makes me settle right down to work, so keep a little stash of tea things somewhere too (I'm imagining a sweet little tray table tucked into a corner or under a window somewhere).

  12. I'd start with artwork that I absolutely love, then use the prominent colors to choose drapes, furniture last. I painted murals on my walls in the colors of my drapes.

  13. I like to find things at thrift stores or garage sales that have interesting shapes, but don't necessarily match, and then paint them all the same color (say, a robin's egg blue?) That way you get visual consistency while recycling and not spending too much money. ;)
