What can I say? I am a big romantic at heart. & I absolutely love period romances. I love how the guys are true gentleman and chivalry is still around. Is anyone else a fan of romance? Here is a 'collection' of image stills + gifs from my top 10 favorite most romantical films that I recommend ;)

I know to some die-hards, this adaptation is not as good as the 1995 adaptation and some don't like Mr. Darcy, but I'm not picky, I love it! I love Keira as Elizabeth.

I'd tell you my #1 favorite but these are all pretty up there. I guess if I had to choose, I'd say North & South and Persuasion. They are must watch, if you haven't seen either! Although Jane Eyre & Under the Greenwood Tree are not far behind ;) Most of these are books of course, so I'd recommend reading them too. I've read a few listed here. I really hope this book gets made into a movie. It'd be amazing!
So what about you? Do you have any films that aren't on this list that you love? I'd say that Atonement, Becoming Jane, and Miss Potter are also very good, but sad too, and I like happy endings! Hope I'm not giving too much away about the films above ;)
A few of these movies are favorites of mine, and a few I've never heard of...my husband and I have a 'stay-in' date night planned for Friday, so I'm hoping I can find one on Netflix. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNorthanger Abbey is my absolute favourite, I've watched it far too many times now but I never get sick of it!
ReplyDeleteAnd the Tenant of Wildfell Hall comes a close second - although that was a TV mini-series.
I must admit, I haven't seen Anne of Green Gables!
I love the images you used for these wonderful films!
ReplyDeleteThese aren't exactly period romances but I love Bridges of Madison County and Same Time Next Year isn't a period romance either but I love the way it covers many decades.
I love this collection!! Oh, this makes me want to curl up, forget work, and have a movie marathon! I'll just have to convince my husband to watch some of these with me...
ReplyDeleteA girl after my own heart! I own so many of these and love them dearly, plus i too love miss potter, atonement and becoming jane, all of which i have too!x
ReplyDeleteI love Anne of Green Gables! I would seriously be more addicted to that show than any book- and that's saying something because I love to read! Ah... and I love Jane Eyre. Such a weird romantic tale.
ReplyDeleteI've seen, and love, all you've listed here except for the newest Jane Eyre and UNder the Greenwood tree.
ReplyDeleteYou forgot Sense and Sensibility though! And Wives and Daughters! And Our Mutual Friend! And... :-) So many good ones!
love the move adaptations of Dicken's works, but they may not exactly fall under the "romantic" film category.
I've seen most of these and couldn't agree more! LOVE these movies! Though I like the Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds the most. But the newer Emma with Romola Garai makes me swoon every single time. I might even have to commit Jane Austen treason and say that I like Mr. Knightley more than Mr. Darcy! And I also love the Keira Knightley Pride & Prejudice more than the BBC version (though I love that one too). Okay...I'll stop. I could go on forever about these movies!
ReplyDeleteAnne of Green Gables is one of my favorite childhood books. Oh and Jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender? Yes, please! Period films are the perfect companion to rainy days.
ReplyDeleteI just finished Anne of Green Gables last week, so I'm very happy to see Anne and Gilbert here~
ReplyDeleteNorth and South looks so good! I'm agreeing with a lot of what's up there, though I have yet to see Persuasion. You've convinced me that I should see it :)
Yes to all of them! Even down to the specific versions of Emma and Pride and Prejudice (I love the 1995 version, but I slightly prefer the new one). All of these are in my top favorites. I would add to the list Bright Star which is sad, but so romantic and breathtakingly beautiful. And Daniel Deronda. And Wives and Daughters - you would probably love that one. These movies are my comfort and I watch and re-watch them as I go about my homely tasks.
ReplyDeletemaybe it's the english in me but i too love period dramas ... i think i have the majority of your list! My favourite jane austin has always been mansfield park though, & you might enjoy downton abbey!
ReplyDeleteLove these! Thanks for the post as there are a few that I haven't seen! I'm adding them to my netflix now! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha. You are so cute. I can totally see you saying the last paragraph even though I've never met you in person! I'm excited to see a lot of these movies on a night in when my bf's busy :)
ReplyDeleteI REALLY REALLY want to see the 2011 Jane Eyer. It looked so romantic in the trailer. I'm so smitten with Gilbert. I love this post. Gets me to want some hot chocolate and some soft socks while watching them.
ReplyDeleteBTW I'm guest posting about mommy fashion over at The Short and the Sweet of It this morning. You should stop by if you get a second =)

oh my... i have never met you before Danni but you have just named in one shot every one of my go-to favorite movies, i had no idea that there was another person out there who could select my top 10 romantic movie favorites as well as i could. I wouldn't add anything to this list, yes i am a 1995 Pride and Prejudice die hard so i would change that (no hard feelings though :) but you hit the mark in my book!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh!!!! I'm a craaaaaving a movie marathon now.
ReplyDeleteLoved this post. So much nostalgia.
Wives and Daughters is a definite favorite of mine (also a book)!!
ReplyDeleteLove all of those. My current favorite watching indulgence is "Larkrise to Candleford". My friend told me about it a while ago and I just hunted down and have been lost in it ever since.
ReplyDeleteAnother fav. is the most recent Persuasion.

Terrific list! I have to second the Bright Star recommendation. Yes, it's sad, but so very lovely. Also, the Tenant and Wildfell Hall is a deliciously moody and romantic one!
ReplyDeleteMy husband shaves his head, which I think looks very sexy on him. The only time I'm sad he has no hair is when I see persuasion! I love captain wentworth's hair. Swoon!!
ReplyDeleteI love all these movies. Seen every single one and own most of them!
ReplyDeleteWHAT?! I can't believe people don't love the new Mr. Darcy. I adore him. :) In fact, I think I'll watch that movie this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteGreat list!! I haven't seen Cranford, but I've been watching the BBC Miniseries **Lark Rise to Candleford** - and based on this list, I think you'd absolutely love it. It's on Itunes if you want to check it out :)
ReplyDeleteNorth and South wins in every way for me (just can't say no to Richard Armitage--what a heartthrob, alas). In addition, Sense and Sensibility, BBC miniseries and the 1995 version with Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman...are both top of my lists too.
ReplyDeleteyes yes yes! North + South is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI loved this! most of these are also my favorites.. but there are some I haven't seen... and I will! :D
ReplyDeleteI Love "Pride and Prejudice"
ReplyDeleteI already saw it about 10 times..........
I adore all of these, but you left off my absolute favorite - Sense and Sensibility!
ReplyDeleteYes! I love several of those movies and now I have a few more to check out. Persuasion is probably my favorite but it's a tough pick. I actually haven't seen that version, but there is another version that I just love.

Aaah, you're speaking my language here! It's definitely time to re-watch some of these!!
ReplyDeleteI just watched Jane Eyre and fell totally in love. My favorite period pieces are Atonement, The English Patient, Sunshine, Dangerous Beauty, Elizabeth... the list goes on and on...

I absolutely adore the 2005 Pride & Prejudice--the style, the soundtrack, Matthew McFayden. I should be embarrassed by how many times I've seen it. I love the BBC version, too, (have the full set on DVD!), but something about the Keira Knightley version just gets me every time!
ReplyDeleteIt is like you took my collection of top favorite movies and put them up there :) But my all time favorite movie has to be Anne of Green Gables! Glad to see a fellow kindred spirit :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this! I LOVE period movies, and anything Victorian. I even got my Master's in Victorian lit. I loved the movie/book Anne of Green gables so much, I named my blog after it!
ReplyDeletexo, Anna of (green gable)
I love love love Redeeming Love! My sister read it in one sitting and gave it to me with puffy tear-filled eyes. I read it all in one all-nighter brimming with tears too and passed it onto a girlfriend. I can't believe I forgot about. It's been almost 10years since I read. Thanks for the reminder it's going on my Christmas to give list.

I can't wait to watch those I haven't seen on this list.
These are SUCH good selections! I love every single one of them that I've read and/or seen. Also, I agree that Redeeming Love needs to be made into a film--it would be really beautiful!
ReplyDeleteTHis might be my favorite post ever! I smiled and remembered. I even giggled. Thank you for making my morning! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love the images that you pick for each movies! Absolutely adore Anne of Green Gables, the sweetest series I've ever read. I wish they make more of Anne's films. ReplyDeleteOh gosh all of these make me so happy!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful list! I loved Anne of Green Gables as a kid (the book that is). I used to make up names of places just like Anne, haha.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Jane Eyre yet because I've been reading the book and I want to finish it before I see it. And Pride and Prejudice was lovely, I really, really liked it.
As for the other movies - I'm adding them to my list right now! Thanks:) xo

ReplyDeleteAah, such an awesome post! I'm in total and utter love with it! You just have to do a part 2, okay? Im a total perido drama fan and have seen a lot of these, but a few are mysteries still!
ReplyDeleteI alwasy thought JAne Eyre was weird and creepy, but I just read a different version of it, a new YA one, and it's so good that I can't wait to read the proper version and see heaps of the film versions!
YOU MUST MUST MUST WATCH DOWNTON ABBEY!
ReplyDeleteit's a British show that is in the Guinness Records for being the most highly acclaimed show on TV EVER.
It's a period show and is now in its second season!
It's amazing and the cast is great at what they do.
And all of season 1 is on Netflix!
Danni this post pretty much made my day:D I LOVE p&p (both versions!) as well as Persuasion! and after reading this I totally checked out North and South and Cranford from the library where I work:) thanks so much for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. Yes. I would marry Gilbert Blithe in a hearbeat. Also, i am excited to see Cranford and North and South in this list. I watched both recently and completely fell in love.
ReplyDeletei also love cranford and emma with gwyenth paltrow - don't forget bright star. oh, and a room with a view, too.
ReplyDeleteAnne of Green Gables is wonderful..would you believe my husband rates it as a one of his favourites too..Of course all the Austen stories are beautiful and Miss Potter is a delight. You have excellent taste!!!
ReplyDeleteum Mansfield Park! a Jane Austen movie--so so good, and a happy ending!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Bright Star. It's a true story and the costumes and overall use of fabric is stunning. I just love fabric ! and love too...
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of North & South until this blog post. THANK YOU for introducing me to one of my new favorite movies!!! :)

ReplyDeleteSome of my faves are:
Little Women (1994)
The Secret Garden (1993)
A Little Princess (1995)
Emma (1996)
The Piano (1993)
actually this one isn't really a period piece but it feels like one because of their clothes/style being in a small irish town...
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994)
Such a lovely post! I love all of these movies!
