collections / period films:

October 4, 2011

What can I say? I am a big romantic at heart. & I absolutely love period romances. I love how the guys are true gentleman and chivalry is still around. Is anyone else a fan of romance? Here is a 'collection' of image stills + gifs from my top 10 favorite most romantical films that I recommend ;)

Who hasn't seen Anne of Green Gables? It is a classic!
If you haven't, you must see it... right now! ;)

Jane Eyre, 2011

I used to be a big fan of the 2006 version (it's listed below as well)
but the 2011 version was brilliant too..!

Pride and Prejudice

I know to some die-hards, this adaptation is not as good as the 1995 adaptation and some don't like Mr. Darcy, but I'm not picky, I love it! I love Keira as Elizabeth.

I'd tell you my #1 favorite but these are all pretty up there. I guess if I had to choose, I'd say North & South and Persuasion. They are must watch, if you haven't seen either! Although Jane Eyre & Under the Greenwood Tree are not far behind ;) Most of these are books of course, so I'd recommend reading them too. I've read a few listed here. I really hope this book gets made into a movie. It'd be amazing!

So what about you? Do you have any films that aren't on this list that you love? I'd say that Atonement, Becoming Jane, and Miss Potter are also very good, but sad too, and I like happy endings! Hope I'm not giving too much away about the films above ;)

60 hello's:

  1. A few of these movies are favorites of mine, and a few I've never heard of...my husband and I have a 'stay-in' date night planned for Friday, so I'm hoping I can find one on Netflix. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Northanger Abbey is my absolute favourite, I've watched it far too many times now but I never get sick of it!
And the Tenant of Wildfell Hall comes a close second - although that was a TV mini-series.

I must admit, I haven't seen Anne of Green Gables!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I love the images you used for these wonderful films!
These aren't exactly period romances but I love Bridges of Madison County and Same Time Next Year isn't a period romance either but I love the way it covers many decades.

  4. I love this collection!! Oh, this makes me want to curl up, forget work, and have a movie marathon! I'll just have to convince my husband to watch some of these with me...

    ReplyDelete
  5. A girl after my own heart! I own so many of these and love them dearly, plus i too love miss potter, atonement and becoming jane, all of which i have too!x

    ReplyDelete
  6. I love Anne of Green Gables! I would seriously be more addicted to that show than any book- and that's saying something because I love to read! Ah... and I love Jane Eyre. Such a weird romantic tale.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I've seen, and love, all you've listed here except for the newest Jane Eyre and UNder the Greenwood tree.

You forgot Sense and Sensibility though! And Wives and Daughters! And Our Mutual Friend! And... :-) So many good ones!

love the move adaptations of Dicken's works, but they may not exactly fall under the "romantic" film category.

  8. I've seen most of these and couldn't agree more! LOVE these movies! Though I like the Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds the most. But the newer Emma with Romola Garai makes me swoon every single time. I might even have to commit Jane Austen treason and say that I like Mr. Knightley more than Mr. Darcy! And I also love the Keira Knightley Pride & Prejudice more than the BBC version (though I love that one too). Okay...I'll stop. I could go on forever about these movies!

  9. Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite childhood books. Oh and Jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender? Yes, please! Period films are the perfect companion to rainy days.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I just finished Anne of Green Gables last week, so I'm very happy to see Anne and Gilbert here~
North and South looks so good! I'm agreeing with a lot of what's up there, though I have yet to see Persuasion. You've convinced me that I should see it :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes to all of them! Even down to the specific versions of Emma and Pride and Prejudice (I love the 1995 version, but I slightly prefer the new one). All of these are in my top favorites. I would add to the list Bright Star which is sad, but so romantic and breathtakingly beautiful. And Daniel Deronda. And Wives and Daughters - you would probably love that one. These movies are my comfort and I watch and re-watch them as I go about my homely tasks.

I wouldn't add anything to this list, yes i am a 1995 Pride and Prejudice die hard so i would change that (no hard feelings though :) but you hit the mark in my book!

  21. Terrific list! I have to second the Bright Star recommendation. Yes, it's sad, but so very lovely. Also, the Tenant and Wildfell Hall is a deliciously moody and romantic one!

    ReplyDelete
  22. My husband shaves his head, which I think looks very sexy on him. The only time I'm sad he has no hair is when I see persuasion! I love captain wentworth's hair. Swoon!!

  26. North and South wins in every way for me (just can't say no to Richard Armitage--what a heartthrob, alas). In addition, Sense and Sensibility, BBC miniseries and the 1995 version with Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman...are both top of my lists too.

  35. I absolutely adore the 2005 Pride & Prejudice--the style, the soundtrack, Matthew McFayden. I should be embarrassed by how many times I've seen it. I love the BBC version, too, (have the full set on DVD!), but something about the Keira Knightley version just gets me every time!

  58. Ooh I love period pieces, I'll have to remember these that I haven't seen yet.

    Some of my faves are:
    Little Women (1994)
    The Secret Garden (1993)
    A Little Princess (1995)
    Emma (1996)
    The Piano (1993)

actually this one isn't really a period piece but it feels like one because of their clothes/style being in a small irish town...
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994)
