goodbye wisdom teeth:

November 28, 2011

Crochet Tooth Pillow by Millie Fern.

Call us crazy but Nick & I are getting our wisdom teeth out today. I know, I know. Lots of people have asked us why we are doing it at the same time. I don't know, it sounded like a good idea at the time. Plus I figured if the doctor and nurse who scheduled our appointment said it'd be okay, then I guess it's okay for couples to do it together...? I'm a little nervous about the whole anesthesia thing, I've never been put under or anything. Plus the recovery over the next couple days - yikes. Have you seen David after Dentist? Nick said we may be like this after we wake up .. pretty funny stuff. But maybe not so funny if it's you, hehe. A couple of my wisdom teeth are erupted so I don't know if that's better or worse, I'm hoping better! Don't worry, my brother is driving us home afterward. Have you had your wisdom teeth out? How was it for you? Any advice for recovery? I've heard it's a breeze from most friends, I just feel like I would be that one case who has a bad recovery or outcome, you know what I mean? ;)

Well 12 days of cheer has officially started today, so I hope you enjoy and possibly even get a few deals for yourself :) Be sure to check back everyday because we're having some pretty sweet deals for the next 12 days, weekends too!

I'll be back tomorrow with a better post.. Happy Monday friends! Hope you enjoy the last couple days of November!

26 hello's:

  1. Awww happy thoughts your way. It's not very fun, but it will be over and done with forever! Good luck =)

  2. Ooh, good luck! I haven't had any of mine removed and I'd prefer to keep it that way!

  3. It's been quite a few years since I had them pulled...wow I'm trying to remember – that's how long it's been! BUT I do remember when they gave me aenesthesia I saw colors like pink and some colors for a few seconds, ha!

Hope it goes well, and is not to painful! :)

  4. A few weeks ago my dentist told me to make an appointment to have mine taken out, but I haven't yet. Most people have told me it's not that bad, but anesthesia seems so scary!

  5. Good luck with everything! I had mine pulled out years ago and it wasn't fun at all but so worth the trouble afterwards. :)

  6. Oh man, good luck! My husband got his wisdom teeth out ten days before our wedding when we found out his insurance wouldn't cover him starting the day we were legally married. He wasn't too loopy after the first ten or so minutes, but he was super sleepy. When I got mine out in high school, well...I remember nothing for four days (thank you, percocet). Luckily my mom's a nurse. Really, it's not horrible, just inconvenient. Take care!

  7. I think it's cool you guys are getting yours taken out together. At least you'll be able to know how the other is feeling ;)

I had an awful experience with mine. It was during my senior year of high school and I missed out an entire week of activities. I also couldn't eat anything for an entire week, smoothies included because I kept upchucking everything :(

Hoping yours and Nick's experience is a-ok!

  8. I had my wisdom teeth removed, and had absolutely no problems afterwards. No swelling, no pain. I even went out for coffee with friends that same night! Hopefully it will be as easy for you!

  9. I was 16 when I had mine out - all 4, plus two eye teeth looking things that were mysteriously located in my cheeks! I had a new boyfriend that I was totally in love with, so I was not out of commission but just the day of the surgery. I had to spend as much time with him as possible lol

I wish you folks the very best and a speedy recovery. My only suggestion - if you get pain meds, don't let the pain become bad before you take the meds. It's harder to bring down pain, than to keep it in check. The first two days at least, just take the pain meds at the times suggested. After that, take as needed, if needed.

  10. had all four out about ten years ago and two were impacted so i was terrified. they did a twilight sleep and as i remember it, not a second seemed to pass. one moment i was anxious, the next, i was done! hope yours moves smoothly. make sure to fill your prescription for painkillers just in case as you can be very sore. no straws, tepid broths and beverages are best. clean the are just like they tell you to and make sure to watch a lot of favorite movies. ;)

  11. Ohh, good luck! I had all 4 of mine out plus a minor oral surgery at the same time, but it still wasn't a bad experience - like everyone says, just inconvenient! I was put to sleep and and was terrified of it, but everything was fine. Lots of resting, lots of couch time (I watched the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy during the recovery period haha), and definitely no solid foods! Be weary of straws, too, because you're not supposed to suction in case you burst the stitches. Smoothies were my sustenance for awhile! (Which may also be why I can't stand smoothies anymore...)

I also couldn't take the pain meds they prescribed (Vicodin) because it made me incredibly dizzy and I started throwing up (which is bad for a mouth with stitches!). Took it down to Tylenol, which was a bit uncomfortable and when it would wear off it was definitely a throb, but nothing unbearable. A speedy recovery to both you and Nick!

  13. Two of my wisdom teeth were removed about 10 years ago. I didn't have health insurance so I went to the local college of dentistry. Two students, a guy and a girl, were in charge of removing two of my wisdom teeth. The grade was for the guy, she was only there to help him. When the guy told the girl that he has never removed wisdom teeth and that he has only seen it in a book, I got a bit nervous. Then, he applied local anesthesia and waited until I was numb. For one of the wisdom teeth, he had to open with the scalpel. I felt the incision and told him that the anesthesia wasn't working. He applied more, a couple of times but nothing. I was feeling everything. Well, to make the story short, both of my wisdom teeth were removed without anesthesia. They took 3 hours to do it because it was so painful that I had to stop them many times. I held the girl's hand strongly through the whole nightmare. I guess she felt the pain too. As soon as I left, the anesthesia started to work.

The recovery was good, no swelling. I only took Tylenol for a few days. The funny thing is that one week later the student called me to arrange the removal of my other two wisdom teeth. Well, I still have them.

I wish you both a fast recovery! :)

  14. I had my wisdom teeth taken out in high school. It was the first time I had had anesthesia of any kind (I hadn't even had novocain before!) so I was pretty nervous about it, but it was totally fine. As always, the anticipation was worse than the actual thing.
I had a super easy recovery, no swelling, and only a little bit of pain, which was manageable with the prescription they gave me. The only bad part of my recovery was that I got a teeny piece of food stuck in one of the holes, which irritated the area, and so my pain lasted longer than usual. But if you clean the holes well (they give you a little syringe to fill with water and squirt into the holes. It feels really weird, but it keeps them clean!) that shouldn't happen.
My advice: have lots of movies ready and don't expect to accomplish too much the first couple of days after the surgery, the pain meds can leave you a little loopy.

  15. I had mine taken out when I was 19. I was very ill afterward. People told me it was a breeze and they were talking and have smoothies in no time. For me, it was not so easy. I was out of it for over a week. I'd borrowed books and films; they remained untouched.

Later on, when I went back to school, the professor was sympathetic and said he was the sickest he'd ever been when he had his wisdom teeth out. I wish I'd gotten this advice sooner and known it varied so much from person to person.

I wish you and Nick a quick recovery.

  16. ha! my brother and I had our wisdom teeth out at the same time when we were in highschool. I remember us both waking up in the recovery room and trying to crazily ask eachother if we got to ride in the cool wheel chair with cotton stuffed in our mouths.
We both came out looking like chipmunks and got to spend several days home from school watching movies and eating icecream. :)

  17. You will love spending your misery together! My sister and I got our wisdom teeth taken out a couple years ago. I actually tell people to do it with someone else, because it makes it more fun and worthwhile! We had a blast keeping each other entertained and making mush foods and trying out foods we could or shouldn't eat. You'll have so much fun! Just stay positive, take plenty of pain killers, and keep ice on your cheeks! Have fun!

  18. Hello! :)

I had all four of mine taken out and I did not get put under... for a couple reasons. The main one being that I had to take a motorcycle exam that evening after my surgery and I couldn't have any narcotics or sedatives. Motrin was my friend.

Tip: Ice on for 15, off for 15 and repeat. Seriously. Most of the pain is from the swelling and if you can keep that down, you're doing good.

Also, try to take your pain meds a little before you actually start feeling pain. Studies show that preventing pain instead of treating it causes faster healing.

Good luck, and I hope you both feel better soon!

  19. No, I have all of my teeth and no pain or problems in the back. I've heard having wisdoms removed rather than filled (if a cavity is an issue) results in a bad outcome: the wisdom teeth act as an anchor for all of the other teeth and once removed the remaining teeth not only shift but can end up with more "problems."

p.s. idk but if i live long enough i'd rather they just fall out naturally. I've never heard what's the oldest age anyone has kept all or most of their teeth. have u? My grandmother is in her late 70s and has practically all of hers.

    peace.

  22. Good luck! I just had mine out about a year ago--wasn't too bad at all!!

  23. During my teenage years I took an acne medication, and apparently one of the side effects was that it practically cemented my wisdom teeth into my jaw. So the dentist had a tough time removing them, and my face was really swollen for a week or so.

    Good luck!

  24. My husband and I both had our wisdom teeth pulled at the same time too.. We enjoyed eating pudding and ice cream together! :) It was nice.. because we both could be miserable together! Ha! But once we were able to eat solid food it was like heaven!

  25. Hi there. I just got mine taken out one week ago!! I'm 26 and it was finally time!

Make sure you EAT if you're taking strong pain meds. You don't feel like it but smoothies (spoon no straw) and applesauce and yogurt will save you from a sick tummy. It's so worth it to eat some than to be nauseous from the medicine that's supposed to make you feel better!! Also, only cold packs for two days. Then heat pad on and off for next days. Don't spit for a week. Just let water gently fall out in the sink when you rinse with salt water or the mouthwash the dentist gives you.

Hearts to you both for a speedy recovery.

  26. Hope things went okay! I'm 35 and I still haven't had mine out. I KNOW I need to do it but I'm such a chicken. And cheap!
